Left groups announce national transfer pact for local elections and pledge to cooperate in fighting austerity

Up to 100 candidates covered by the pact and pledge across the state

Representatives from the People Before Profit Alliance, Anti Austerity Alliance, Workers Party, United Left and Independent candidates gathered today to sign up to a joint pledge committing to a national transfer pact in areas where there are multiple candidates from the various organisations. The pledge furthermore commits the candidates and their groups to stay out of coalitions with pro-austerity parties in the council chambers and to jointly fight against the ongoing austerity agenda.

Michael O’Brien, Anti Austerity Alliance candidate for the Beaumont – Donaghmede ward in Dublin City Council said:

“Next week there will be a mass desertion of voters from Labour. Those from the radical left who have been seen to struggle the hardest against the austerity agenda are poised for a breakthrough. The positions we win will be platforms for organising the fight against water taxes and other austerity measures.With the government likely to be greatly weakened after this election people’s morale to fight them can be restored.”

Nicola Curry People Before Profit local election candidate in Dublin Glencullen-Sandyford ward in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown commented

“This government promised to protect ‘the vulnerable’ yet their whole recovery strategy is focused on keeping the markets happy regardless of the damage done to our society. Austerity is destroying working class communities and it is often women, disproportionately affected by cutbacks, who are left to pick up the pieces and endure even more care burdens.”

Mick Finnegan, Workers’ Party candidate for Lucan Palmerstown in South Dublin County Council added

“Local services should be paid for through fair taxation and not increased charges on hard-pressed families. In this election people must be offered a real choice between politicians who do the bidding of the rich and those who represent workers, the real wealth producers. Only by cooperation among left-wing groups can such a progressive choice be offered.”

Brendan Young, Independent, Community Solidarity candidate for Celbridge-Leixlip in Kildare said:

“Labour is the party of broken promises. The treacherous trio of Gilmore, Burton and Howlin – without whom Kenny could not rule – are merchants of hardship and wreckers of lives. I will work with others to challenge the cosy consensus of Fine Gale-Labour, Fianna Fáil and some Independents – who willingly tax ordinary people and impose brutal cuts to protect wealthy bankers and speculators.”

The pledge being signed up to by the left groups and Independents is:

– As a candidate in the local elections 2014, I pledge to :
– fight property and water taxes;
– oppose any cutbacks or new austerity taxes on ordinary people;
-not to enter into coalitions or deals with the parties bringing in such measures;
– promote policies which unite ordinary people against austerity, fighting for the rights of all and resisting division on the lines of race, gender, religion or sexuality;
– call for a transfer to candidates signing up to  this pledge.

40% Women Candidates

People Before Profit Alliance has highest percentage (40%) of women candidates

The People Before Profit Alliance has the highest percentage of women candidates of any political party running in the 2014 local elections with 17 women from around the country contesting the local elections. In addition, Cllr. Bríd Smith is also the People Before Profit candidate for Dublin in the European Election.

Ailbhe Smyth, leading feminist and People Before Profit’s National Convener said: “For too long Irish politics has been dominated by men with only 91 women elected to the Dáil since the foundation of the State. In fact Ireland has one of the worst gender imbalances in the world. Women currently hold 25 seats out of 166, a figure of just 15.1%. Although low, this is a record high for the number of women elected in a general election in Ireland. This is simply not good enough and must change. People Before Profit is proud to lead the way by bringing more women into politics by fighting against austerity policies that compound inequality between men and women.”

Cllr. Bríd Smith local election and Euro election candidate commented: “This government pays lip service to gender equality. They pretend that they are serious about promoting equality while at the same time they implement austerity policies that disproportionately effect women like cuts to maternity benefit and the lone parent allowance. Cuts to essential public services like respite care and attacks on children with special needs mean that it is often left to women to pick up the pieces and endure even more care burdens.”

Cllr. Melisa Halpin, running in Dun Laoghaire said: “Everyday People Before Profit councillors see the lived reality of government austerity. Cuts hit women on low incomes the hardest. This government promised to protect ‘the vulnerable’ yet their whole recovery strategy is focused on keeping the markets happy regardless of the damage done to society as a whole.”

Tina Mac Veigh, People Before Profit candidate for Dublin Crumlin-Kimmage also commented: “The neoliberal agenda is at its most vicious when it targets working class women and their local communities. That is why all of us, men and women, need to fight together to resist the brutal austerity that is threatening to destroy our communities.”

Nicola Curry, People Before Profit candidate for Dublin Glencullen-Sandyford added: “It is no accident that so many of People Before Profit’s candidates are women. Very often it is women who have been at the forefront of local and community resistance to government imposed cuts that has devastated the lives and communities of working class people.”

Why vote Nicola Curry, No. 1?

Nicola Curry is a working mother of two who returned to education at UCD as a mature student. She qualified with a degree in social science, specialising in social policy. She also received a Masters Degree.

She became involved in politics through campaigning on local environmental and community issues. Since her graduation with a Masters in Social Science from UCD she ran in the General Election 2011 where she received a substantial vote and helped establish a vibrant People before Profit branch in the Nutgrove area which has campaigned against cuts to local services. Nicola was also the local co-ordinator of Campaign Against Home and Water Taxes and the campaign to stop the sell-off of our forests.

She is the chairperson of the Ballyogan Environment Group which was set up by local residents because of concerns about a waste disposal centre located in her residential area. She believes in environmental justice and opposes the disproportionate use of working class areas for the location of noxious facilities.

Nicola Curry is a passionate advocate of equality of access to education. She does not believe private schools should be subsidised with taxpayer’s money while schools in poorer areas are under resourced.

She is opposed to private insurance company cherry picking healthy clients. She wants to end the two tier health system where public patients are left on trolleys and AE units can sometimes look like war zones. She wants people to be treated according to medical need – not the size of their bank balance.

Nicola Curry believes that we have democratic right to organise and question those with economic and political power, and the right to be involved in decision making regarding how our society is run.

PLEDGE

If elected as a Councillor for People Before Profit I, Nicola Curry pledge:
– Not to participate in the junket culture of councils.
– Not to vote for council budgets that include cuts or stealth taxes or do any deals with the right wing pro austerity parties.
– To oppose any motions or initiatives that would see the privatization of council services or outsourcing of council jobs
All People Before Profit candidates pledge to refuse to claim expenses for “educations” junkets. This is effectively a salary top up. Take the salaries plus expenses for Dublin City Council: Brid Smith took home the basic wage: €16,000. Whereas other councillors brought their effective take home pay up to €50,000 with expenses. No PBP councillor will do this. If they do, they must answer to the membership and face expulsion. This mechanism prevents cronyism, corruption, and careerist politicians.

Last November’s budget was the eighth austerity budget and slashed hospitals, schools, benefits and other public services whilst letting those earning huge sums of money off the hook…again.And what have all these austerity measures achieved? The economic situation is now worse then ever, with nearly half a million people unemployed;  the total cost for the bank bailout rises ever higher, with billions more of our money being squandered with every passing week.This is unacceptable – The people of Ireland are being forced against their will and without any democratic consultation to pay for the crimes and mistakes of the super rich and their politician friends. THEY have destroyed this country yet their vast salaries and wealth is untouched. Anglo Irish bond holders have between them have assets that are conservatively estimated at 207 trillion Euros!! We say that it is time that the wealthy pay for the crisis that they created.

Defend the interests of the citizens of Ireland. Join the party that is committed to putting the needs of the people of this country ahead of a profit seeking wealthy elite.
